The name Aragonite comes from the city of Aragón in Spain, the region where this superb gemstone was first discovered in 1609. After hundreds of millions of years, Aragonite will transform under "normal" conditions into Calcite, a stone with the same chemical composition. Depending on its growth conditions, it can exhibit a wide variety of appearances, all equally beautiful. Seashells and pearls are largely composed of Aragonite. This gemstone is extremely sensitive to CO2 levels. It therefore provides valuable information to marine researchers about the acidification level of salt water. Aragonite "encodes" this information in its crystalline structure. Aragonite is thus one of the indicators of the health of our oceans. Its blue color is due to the presence of copper in its composition.
