Aventurine is a member of the Quartz family. It exhibits a unique optical effect: aventurescence. When viewed closely, this gemstone contains tiny, slightly shimmering flecks (usually of Fuchsite, the green variety of Mica). We know it was already in use in ancient China approximately 4000 years ago. Its name was only attributed relatively recently in reference to a happy accident. It comes from the Italian "per aventure," meaning "by chance." This refers to a discovery made by a glassmaker on the island of Murano who accidentally poured small copper flakes into a glass paste, thus creating a shimmering glass, aventurine glass. Aventurine was named by analogy to this glass.
