The name of this magnificent gemstone comes from the Latin "selinitis", which means moonstone. It was named so because lunar reflections can be observed on its surface. It is a hydrated calcium sulfate that belongs to the large gypsum family. One of the things that makes this stone so special is its fibrous texture, which can even be observed with the naked eye! Selenite is an evaporite. It grows when a liquid seeps into mineral-rich veins and evaporates. Thanks to the text of the naturalist Pliny the Elder, we know that in antiquity, Selenite was used to make windows. Slabs of this beautiful gemstone were also used to engrave prayers. When it takes on a beautiful orange color, it is because it contains small hematite inclusions.
