The name of this magnificent gemstone comes from the Latin "selinitis," which means moonstone. It was named so because its surface displays moon-like reflections. It is a hydrated calcium sulfate (CaSO₄·2H₂O) belonging to the large gypsum family. One of the things that makes this stone so special is its fibrous texture, which can even be observed with the naked eye! Selenite is an evaporite. It grows when liquid seeps into mineral-rich veins and evaporates. Thanks to the writings of the naturalist Pliny the Elder, we know that in antiquity, selenite was used to make windows. Slabs of this beautiful gemstone were also used for engraving prayers.
