The name Agate was given to this beautiful gemstone by the Greek philosopher and naturalist Theophrastus between the 4th and 3rd centuries BC. He found this stone near the Achates River (now called Dirillo) in Sicily. The inhabitants of that time already knew and used Agate for decorative purposes but had not given it a name. Agate primarily forms in volcanic environments. A silica-rich liquid seeps into empty pockets within rocks. Due to pressure and temperature conditions, a crystallization process occurs. Agate forms layer by layer. For each layer, some chemical elements will vary or change in concentration. Thus, in this gemstone, colors and tones succeed one another to create stones with unique patterns and tonalities.
