The Green River Formation, in the United States, is one of the world's most famous fossil deposits, formed about 50 million years ago in vast ancient lakes covering present-day Wyoming, Utah, and Colorado. Fish fossils on sandstone slabs from this region are renowned for their exceptional preservation, with sometimes very fine details of fins, scales, and even complete silhouettes frozen in the rock. This remarkable preservation is due to very fine sediment deposits in calm, oxygen-poor waters, which allowed for rapid and almost intact fossilization of organisms. These pieces now offer valuable testimony to Eocene aquatic life and the geological history of Earth.
