The name Aragonite comes from the city of Aragón in Spain, the region where this superb gemstone was first found in 1609. After hundreds of millions of years, under "normal" conditions, Aragonite transforms into Calcite, a stone with the same chemical composition. Depending on its growth conditions, it can have very varied but equally beautiful appearances. Seashells and pearls are largely composed of Aragonite. This gemstone is extremely sensitive to CO2 levels. It therefore provides valuable information to marine researchers on the acidification level of saltwater. Aragonite "codes" this information in its crystalline structure. Aragonite is therefore one of the indicators of the health of our oceans.
