Origin: Namibia.

Purpurite is a manganese and iron phosphate, often formed when Triphylite undergoes strong oxidation. It can also appear alone, in crystallized clusters. First identified in 1905 by L.C. Graton and W.T. Schaller, it gets its name from the Latin "purpura", referring to its beautiful purple hue. The most prized specimens come from Namibia, but it is also found in France, Western Australia and North Carolina, USA.
