The name Agate was given to this beautiful gem by the Greek philosopher and naturalist Theophrastus between the 4th and 3rd centuries BC. He had found this stone near the Achates River (now called the Dirillo) in Sicily. The inhabitants of the time were already familiar with Agate and used it for decorative purposes, but they had not yet given it a name. Agate forms primarily in volcanic environments. A silica-rich liquid seeps into empty pockets within the rocks. Due to the pressure and temperature conditions, a crystallization process occurs. Agate forms layer by layer. For each layer, certain chemical elements vary or change their concentration levels. Thus, in this gem, colors and tones alternate to create stones with unique patterns and hues.
