The name Agate was given to this beautiful gemstone by the Greek philosopher and naturalist Theophrastus between the 4th and 3rd centuries BC. He had found this stone near the Achates River (now called the Dirillo) in Sicily. The inhabitants of the time actually knew agate and were already using it for decorative purposes, but had not given it a name. Agate forms mainly in volcanic environments. A silica-rich liquid seeps into empty pockets inside the rocks. Due to the pressure and temperature conditions, a crystallization process takes place. Agate forms layer by layer. For each of the layers, a few chemical elements will vary or change in concentration. Thus, in this gemstone, colors and shades follow one another to create stones with unique patterns and tones.
