Red Jasper was already used in ancient Egypt for creating protective amulets and sculptures. It has always been closely linked to the Earth and fertility: for the Greeks, it was associated with the goddess Gaia; for Native Americans, red jasper represented the blood of the Earth, etc. Red Jasper is an opaque member of the Quartz family. Its name is believed to come from the Greek word "iaspis" meaning "speckled stone" or from the Hebrew "yashepheh" which translates to "Agate". Its deep red color (rarely uniform) is due to the presence of iron in its structure.
