The name Amethyst comes from the Greek word "amethystos," meaning "not drunk." The Greeks regularly drank from amethyst cups to slow the effects of alcohol. According to a Greek legend, the god of wine, Dionysus, fell madly in love with a beautiful young woman named Amethystos. He desired her, but she wished to remain pure. She therefore implored the goddess Artemis, who, to protect her, transformed her into a beautiful, colorless crystal. Dionysus, furious, then threw his cup of wine onto the crystal, thus giving it its purple color.
