Aventurine is a member of the Quartz family. It exhibits a particular optical effect: aventurescence. When looking closely at this gemstone, one notices that it contains micro-flakes (usually Fuchsite, the green variety of Mica) that shimmer slightly. We know that it was already used in ancient China around 4000 years ago. Its name was only attributed to it relatively recently, in reference to a fortunate accident. It comes from the Italian "per aventure" which means "by chance." This refers to a discovery made by a glassblower on the island of Murano who accidentally poured small copper flakes into a glass paste, thus creating a sparkling glass, aventurine glass. Aventurine was named in analogy to this glass.
