The name Agate was given to this beautiful gemstone by the Greek philosopher and naturalist Theophrastus between the 4th and 3rd century BC. He found this stone near the Achates River (now called Dirillo) in Sicily. The inhabitants of that time already knew agate and used it for decorative purposes but had not given it a name. Agate forms mainly in volcanic environments. A silica-rich liquid seeps into empty pockets within the rocks. Due to pressure and temperature conditions, a crystallization process will occur. Agate forms layer by layer. For each of the layers, some chemical elements will vary or change in concentration level. Thus, in this gemstone, colors and tones follow one another to create stones with unique patterns and tonalities.
