The name of this magnificent gem comes from the Latin "selinitis," meaning moonstone. It was named for the lunar reflections visible on its surface. It is a calcium hydrosulfate belonging to the large gypsum family. One of the things that makes this stone so special is its fibrous texture, which can even be seen with the naked eye! Selenite is an evaporite. It grows when a liquid seeps into mineral-rich veins and evaporates. Thanks to the writings of the naturalist Pliny the Elder, we know that in ancient times, selenite was used to make windows. Plaques of this beautiful gem were also used to engrave prayers.
