Specularite, also called Specular Hematite, is a variety of Hematite composed mainly of iron oxide (Fe₂O₃).

Its name comes from the Latin speculum, meaning "mirror", referring to its thousands of small crystallized lamellae that reflect light like a shower of silvery splinters. Its deep color, ranging from black to steel gray, contrasts with its bright metallic reflections. The dark part generally corresponds to massive or less crystallized Hematite, while the glitters are formed by thin lamellae of crystallized Hematite that capture and reflect light.

Exploited since Antiquity as an iron ore, Hematite has also been used as a natural pigment due to its characteristic red powder. Today, Specularite is particularly sought after for its unique aesthetic, where the material seems to hide a multitude of small mineral mirrors. As Specularite crystals are naturally very fine, plates intended for collection or decoration can be coated with a transparent varnish. This helps to fix the small crystalline lamellae, limits their crumbling and the dispersion of iron oxide dust, while preserving the metallic luster that makes this stone so beautiful.
