The name Pyrite comes from the Greek word "pyros," meaning fire. It was only later, around 1845, that this name was given to this gemstone. The name derives from the fact that when pyrite is rubbed against iron, it produces sparks. In prehistoric times, it was indeed used for this purpose. During the Gold Rush, it disappointed many, as it was mistaken for the precious metal. Pyrite is also called "fool's gold" for this reason. Paradoxically, pyrite does contain traces of gold, but in negligible quantities.
