The name of this magnificent gemstone comes from the Latin "selinitis," meaning moonstone. It was named as such because lunar reflections can be observed on its surface. It is a calcium hydrosulfate belonging to the large family of Gypsums. One of the things that makes this stone so special is its fibrous texture, which can even be seen with the naked eye! Selenite is an evaporite. It grows when a liquid seeps into mineral-rich veins and evaporates. Thanks to the text of the naturalist Pliny the Elder, we know that in antiquity, Selenite was used for making windows. Slabs of this beautiful gemstone were also used to engrave prayers.
