Sphère de Cornaline l SOLYA l Cristaux & Minéraux

A mineral species is scientifically defined by two things: its chemical composition and the geometry of its atomic structure. For the vast majority of gemstones, this structure exhibits a highly complex geometry. Crystallographers have created a classification system (the seven crystal systems) that allows each gemstone to be placed in a specific category. One atom bonds to another in a very precise way to create a molecule; these molecules then arrange themselves into a three-dimensional structure, creating a fascinating crystal.

Pointe de Pyrite, de Cristal de Roche et d'Améthyste l SOLYA l Bijoux, Cristaux & Minéraux

This structure and the chemical composition of the gem give it remarkable properties. For example, some stones (like Alexandrite) display different colors depending on the light source under which you observe them; others, like Tourmaline, become electrically charged when heated and then cooled (this is called pyroelectricity); some, like Andalusite, show different colors depending on the angle from which you view the stone (this phenomenon is called pleochroism),…

Many other equally fascinating phenomena are created by these physico-chemical properties without being observable.
