Ammonites are cephalopod fossils. They disappeared from the planet at almost the same time as the dinosaurs. Therefore, every one that you hold in your hands is over 200 million years old. Throughout history, several symbolic meanings have been associated with this fascinating fossil: for the Greeks, it was said to bring sweet sleep, while in ancient China, it protected against the evil eye... Pliny the Elder referred to this gem by the name "Ammonis cornua," which means horn of Ammon, in reference to the Egyptian god Ammon, as he was often depicted with ram's horns.
