Aventurine is a member of the quartz family. It exhibits a unique optical effect: aventurinescence. When viewed closely, this gemstone contains tiny, slightly sparkling flakes (usually of fuchsite, the green variety of mica). We know it was already used in ancient China around 4,000 years ago. Its name was given to it relatively recently, referring to a happy accident. This comes from the Italian "per aventure," meaning "by chance." It refers to a discovery made by a glassmaker on the island of Murano who accidentally spilled small copper flakes into a glass paste, creating a sparkling glass called aventurine glass. Aventurine was named in analogy to this glass.
