The name Aragonite comes from the city of Aragón in Spain, where this superb Gem was first found in 1609. After hundreds of millions of years, Aragonite will transform under "normal" conditions into Calcite, a stone with the same chemical composition. Depending on its growth conditions, it can exhibit very varied but equally beautiful aspects. The shells of shellfish and pearls are largely composed of Aragonite. This Gem is extremely sensitive to CO2 levels. It therefore provides valuable information to marine researchers on the level of acidification of saltwater. Aragonite "codes" this information in its crystalline structure. Aragonite is therefore one of the indicators of the health of our oceans.
