Aventurine is a member of the Quartz family. It exhibits a peculiar optical effect: aventurescence. When viewed closely, this gemstone contains tiny, slightly shimmering flakes (usually Fuchsite, the green variety of Mica). We know that it was already used in ancient China around 4000 years ago. Its name was only attributed relatively recently in reference to a happy accident. It comes from the Italian "per aventure" which means "by chance." This refers to a discovery made by a glassmaker on the island of Murano who accidentally poured small copper flakes into a glass paste, thus creating a shimmering glass, aventurine glass. Aventurine was named by analogy to this glass.
