Cordierite, called Iolite in gemology, is named after the French geologist Pierre Louis Antoine Cordier. He studied it in 1809 and initially named it Dichroite due to its color changes depending on the viewing angle. This property led some researchers to believe that Vikings may have used crystals such as Iolite or Calcite (Iceland spar) to navigate at sea. By reading the polarization of light in the sky, these stones would have allowed them to locate the sun even under clouds and navigate without a compass.
