Aventurine is a member of the Quartz family. It has a particular optical effect: aventurescence. When one looks closely at this gemstone, one notices that it contains micro-sparkles (generally of Fuchsite, the green variety of Mica) that are slightly shimmering. We know that it was already used in ancient China around 4000 years ago. Its name was attributed to it relatively recently in reference to a happy accident. This comes from the Italian "per aventura" which means "by chance". This refers to a discovery made by a glassmaker on the island of Murano who accidentally poured small copper flakes into a glass paste, thus creating a shimmering glass, aventurine glass. Aventurine was named by analogy to this glass.
