The name Pyrite comes from the Greek word "pyros" meaning fire. It was belatedly attributed to this gemstone (around 1845). This name comes from the fact that when Pyrite is rubbed against iron, it produces sparks. In prehistoric times, it was used for this purpose. During the Gold Rush, it disappointed many because it was confused with this precious metal. Pyrite is also called "Fool's Gold" for this reason. Paradoxically, Pyrite contains traces of Gold, but in negligible quantities.
