Aventurine is a member of the Quartz family. It exhibits a peculiar optical effect: aventurescence. When looking closely at this gemstone, one can see that it contains microscopic glitter (generally Fuchsite, the green variety of Mica) that sparkles slightly. We know that it was already used in ancient China around 4000 years ago. Its name was only attributed relatively recently in reference to a happy accident. It comes from the Italian "per aventura" which means "by chance". This refers to a discovery made by a glassmaker on the island of Murano who accidentally poured small copper flakes into a glass paste, thus creating a sparkling glass, aventurine glass. Aventurine was named by analogy to this glass.
