The name Turquoise means “Turkish stone” because this small treasure was brought back to Europe by the Turks during the Crusades. Turquoise was already worn in ancient Egypt. The mask of Pharaoh Tutankhamun was, among other things, set with several turquoise stones. The Navajo people saw this gem as a piece of the sky that had fallen to earth.
