Smoky quartz owes its beautiful color, which can range from light brown to almost opaque dark brown, to natural irradiation. In 12th-century China, smoky quartz was cut into slabs and used to make sunglasses. In the 19th century, this lovely gem was highly prized by fortune tellers, who preferred it to rock crystal because its captivating color concealed secrets from the uninitiated.
