This beautiful gemstone was first described in the early 1800s, although it had been known and used since antiquity. Its name comes from the Greek "Rhodon" which means rose. For the Greeks and Romans, Rhodonite was a symbol of friendship as well as a protective stone. In Russia, it was widely used for the creation of art objects and also as a decorative element in some museums and the palace of St. Petersburg where it adorns some columns. Tsar Alexander II even had his wife's tombstone carved from this stone, using a huge raw block weighing 49 tons. The carved slab still weighed 7 tons!
