The word sodalite comes from the association of the word “soda,” meaning “sodium,” and the Greek “lithos,” meaning “stone,” so it is literally the sodium stone. Sodalite's great popularity in Europe is largely due to the wife of the King of England, Mary of Teck. During a diplomatic visit to Canada, she was presented with this gemstone and instantly fell in love with it. Her husband, King George V, then ordered a large quantity for England, particularly to decorate their apartments.
