Black tourmaline is also called schorl. Although used throughout the world for a very long time, it only arrived in Europe at the beginning of the 18th century thanks to Dutch sailors. They used this gem to clean their pipes. Indeed, it is pyroelectric (when heated, it accumulates opposite electrical charges). By rubbing it against their clothes, they created an ash magnet.
