The name of this magnificent gemstone comes from the Latin "selinitis" which means moonstone. It was named as such because lunar reflections can be observed on its surface. It is a calcium hydrosulfate belonging to the large gypsum family. One of the things that makes this stone so special is its fibrous texture, which can be observed with the naked eye! Selenite is an evaporite. It grows when a liquid infiltrates mineral-rich veins and evaporates. Thanks to the text of the naturalist Pliny the Elder, we know that in ancient times Selenite was used for making windows. Plates of this beautiful gemstone were also used to engrave prayers.
