The name Pyrite comes from the Greek word "pyros" meaning fire. It was attributed to this gemstone late in its history (around 1845). This name comes from the fact that when Pyrite is rubbed against iron, it produces sparks. In prehistoric times, it was used for this purpose. During the Gold Rush, it caused many disappointments as it was confused with this precious metal. Pyrite is also called "fool's gold" for this reason. Paradoxically, Pyrite contains traces of Gold, but in negligible quantities.
