Aventurine is a member of the Quartz family. It has a particular optical effect: aventurescence. When looking closely at this gem, one notices that it contains micro-sparkles (generally Fuchsite, the green variety of Mica) that shimmer slightly. We know that it was already used in ancient China about 4000 years ago. Its name was only attributed to it relatively recently in reference to a happy accident. It comes from the Italian "per aventure" which means "by chance". This refers to a discovery made by a glassmaker on the island of Murano who accidentally poured small copper flakes into a glass paste, thus creating a sparkling glass, aventurine glass. Aventurine was named by analogy to this glass.
