Aventurine is a member of the Quartz family. It exhibits a unique optical effect: aventurescence. When viewed closely, this gemstone is seen to contain tiny, slightly shimmering flecks (usually Fuchsite, the green variety of Mica). We know it was already used in ancient China about 4000 years ago. Its name was only attributed relatively recently in reference to a happy accident. It comes from the Italian "per aventure" which means "by chance". This refers to a discovery made by a glassmaker on the island of Murano who accidentally poured small copper flakes into a glass paste, thus creating a shimmering glass, aventurine glass. Aventurine was named by analogy with this glass.
