Aventurine is a member of the Quartz family. It exhibits a particular optical effect: aventurescence. When viewed closely, this gemstone contains micro-glitters (generally Fuchsite, the green variety of Mica) that shimmer slightly. We know that it was already used in ancient China around 4000 years ago. Its name was only attributed relatively recently in reference to a happy accident. This comes from the Italian "per aventure" which means "by chance". This refers to a discovery made by a glassmaker from the island of Murano who accidentally poured small copper glitters into a glass paste, thus creating a sparkling glass, aventurine glass. Aventurine was named by analogy to this glass.
