The word sodalite comes from the association of the word “soda,” meaning “sodium,” and the Greek “lithos,” meaning “stone,” so it is literally the stone of sodium. The great popularity of Sodalite in Europe is largely due to the wife of the King of England, Mary of Teck. During a diplomatic visit to Canada, she was presented with this gemstone, with which she instantly fell in love. Her husband, King George V, then ordered a large quantity for England, particularly to decorate their apartments.
