The word sodalite comes from the association of the word “soda,” meaning “sodium,” and the Greek “lithos,” meaning “stone,” thus literally "sodium stone." The great popularity of Sodalite in Europe is largely due to the wife of the King of England, Mary of Teck. During a diplomatic visit to Canada, she was presented with this gemstone and instantly fell in love with it. Her husband, King George V, then ordered a large quantity for England, notably to decorate their apartments.
