The name Aragonite comes from the city of Aragon in Spain, where this superb gemstone was first found in 1609. After hundreds of millions of years, Aragonite will transform under "normal" conditions into Calcite, a stone with the same chemical composition. Depending on its growth conditions, it can have very varied aspects, each as beautiful as the next. Seashells and pearls are largely composed of Aragonite. This gemstone is extremely sensitive to CO2 levels. It therefore offers valuable information to marine researchers on the acidification level of saltwater. Aragonite "codes" this information into its crystalline structure. Aragonite is therefore one of the indicators of the health of our oceans.
