Aventurine is a member of the Quartz family. It has a particular optical effect: aventurescence. When you look closely at this gemstone, you can see that it contains micro flakes (usually Fuchsite, the green variety of Mica) that shimmer slightly. We know that it was already used in ancient China about 4000 years ago. Its name was only attributed to it relatively recently, in reference to a happy accident. It comes from the Italian "per aventura" which means "by chance." This refers to a discovery made by a glassmaker on the island of Murano who accidentally poured small copper flakes into a glass paste, thus creating a shimmering glass, aventurine glass. Aventurine was named by analogy to this glass.
