The name Aragonite comes from the city of Aragon in Spain, the region where this superb gemstone was first found in 1609. After hundreds of millions of years, Aragonite will transform into Calcite under "normal" conditions, a stone with the same chemical composition. Depending on its growth conditions, it can present very varied aspects, each as beautiful as the next. Seashells and pearls are largely composed of Aragonite. This gemstone is extremely sensitive to CO2 levels. It therefore provides valuable information to marine researchers on the acidification level of salt water. Aragonite "codes" this information in its crystalline structure. Aragonite is therefore one of the indicators of the health of our oceans. Its blue color is due to the presence of copper in its composition.
