The word sodalite comes from the association of the word "soda", meaning "sodium", and the Greek "lithos", meaning "stone"; it is therefore literally the sodium stone. The great popularity of Sodalite in Europe is largely due to the wife of the King of England, Mary of Teck. During a diplomatic visit to Canada, she was presented with this gemstone, with which she instantly fell in love. Her husband, King George V, then ordered a large quantity for England, notably to decorate their apartments.
