This beautiful gem was first described in the early 1800s, although it had been known and used since antiquity. Its name comes from the Greek "Rhodon", meaning rose. For the Greeks and Romans, Rhodonite was a symbol of friendship but also a protective stone. In Russia, it was widely used for the creation of art objects and as a decorative element in some museums and in the palace of Saint Petersburg where it adorns some columns. Tsar Alexander II even had the slab of his wife's tomb carved from this stone, using an enormous raw block weighing 49 tons. The slab, once carved, still weighed 7 tons!
