The word sodalite comes from the combination of the word "soda," meaning "sodium," and the Greek word "lithos," meaning "stone," so it literally means sodium stone. Sodalite's great popularity in Europe is largely due to Mary of Teck, the wife of the King of England. During a diplomatic visit to Canada, she was presented with this gemstone and instantly fell in love with it. Her husband, King George V, then ordered a large quantity of it for England, notably to decorate their apartments.
