The word sodalite comes from the association of the word "soda," meaning "sodium," and the Greek "lithos," meaning "stone"; it is therefore literally the sodium stone. Sodalite's great popularity in Europe is largely due to the wife of the King of England, Mary of Teck. During a diplomatic visit to Canada, she was presented with this gemstone and instantly fell in love with it. Her husband, King George V, then ordered a large quantity for England, particularly to decorate their apartments.
