The name Agate was given to this beautiful gemstone by the Greek philosopher and naturalist Theophrastus between the 4th and 3rd century BC. He found this stone near the Achates River (now called Dirillo) in Sicily. The inhabitants of that time actually knew agate and already used it for decorative purposes but had not given it a name. Agate forms mainly in volcanic environments. A silica-rich liquid infiltrates empty pockets within rocks. Due to pressure and temperature conditions, a crystallization process will occur. Agate will form layer by layer. For each layer, some chemical elements will vary or change concentration levels. Thus, in this gemstone, colors and tones succeed one another to create stones with unique patterns and tones.
