Black Tourmaline is also known as Schorl. Although it has been used worldwide for a very long time, it only arrived in Europe at the beginning of the 18th century thanks to Dutch sailors. They used this gemstone to clean their pipes. Indeed, it is pyroelectric (when heated, it accumulates opposite electrical charges). By rubbing it against their clothes, they made it into an ash magnet.
