Black tourmaline is also known as Schorl. Although it has been used around the world for a very long time, it only arrived in Europe in the early 18th century thanks to Dutch sailors. They used this gemstone to clean their pipes. Indeed, it is pyroelectric (when heated, it accumulates opposite electrical charges). By rubbing it against their clothes, they turned it into an ash magnet.
