Black Tourmaline is also called Schorl. Although used worldwide for a very long time, it only arrived in Europe at the beginning of the 18th century thanks to Dutch sailors. They used this gem to clean their pipes. Indeed, it is pyroelectric (when heated, it accumulates opposite electrical charges). By rubbing it against their clothes, they made it an ash magnet.
